On Saturday, Feb 1st 2003, KHEN presented its first full day of broadcasting featuring short samples of all the upcoming programming.
Here are some pictures and sounds of that day.
A view down F street, looking at Tenderfoot hill (note the "S" for Salida). KHEN is just to the right of the photographer. (Click to enlarge.) |

The studios, with the new banner (note the chicken). You can barely make out the antenna, above. (Click to enlarge.) |
9:00 AM. Jane opens the first day of programming. Listen to the countdown, her first words, the chicken, and the cheering. (Click to enlarge.) |
Soon afterwards, everybody gathered to cheer. Left to right: Mark Halstead (volunteer, computer guru, and
my gracious host), Wendy |
Jack (a.k.a. Cactus Jack), doing an informative bluegrass show. (Click to enlarge.) |
Haven, playing her swing music. She also substituted for "the kids", by presenting some of the "Cruizin' Tunes" that the youngest DJs will be bringing to Salida. Haven and Mark hosted me in their wonderful Victorian house while I was assembling KHEN's studios. (Click to enlarge.) |
Jamie, bringing his own chair. (Click to enlarge.) |
Linnea explores real life issues from a spiritual perspective, combining practical advice with call-ins and non-denominational prayers. (Click to enlarge.) |
Lonnie and Phil bring their own stereo, so that they can play all their cassettes. They'll open up Sunday mornings with Gospel, followed by pop classical music. Lovely people! (Click to enlarge.) |
Terry: treasurer, carpenter, DJ (a.k.a: Tony), next-door neighbor (the antenna is mounted on his roof) and all-around nice guy. (Click to enlarge.) |
Out of the blue, these supporters showed up with a piano for KHEN! At this rate, KHEN will get all the support it needs! (Click to enlarge.) |
Seven bicycles and no cars: now that's an environmental radio station! (Click to enlarge.) |
The antenna, mounted over Terry's roof. A bit low, but a least nobody can consider it an eyesore! (Click to enlarge.) |
Also, see this report of putting KHEN's on the air.
